Every Question We've Heard
The basics
What does First Name Cleaner do?
It finds the broken first names in your Klaviyo, HubSpot or Mailchimp list (ALL CAPS, all lowercase, full names in the first-name field, junk values) and fixes them in the list itself. Anything uncertain is held for your review, so nothing gets guessed.
Why does the first name matter so much?
It’s the first word of most emails and texts you send. When it reads “Hi JENNIFER S,” or “Hi ,” the message looks like a mass blast, and people stop reading. Personalization only pays when the name is right: in Klaviyo’s BFCM report, messages with personalized, dynamic content had a 40% higher average order conversion rate (Klaviyo).
What kinds of broken names do you fix?
ALL CAPS (JENNIFER → Jennifer), all lowercase (mckay → McKay), stray characters and emoji, and codes left behind by CRM exports (Za'Rina → Za'Rina). Full names in the first-name field, titles like “Ms.”, and junk like “test” are held for your review.
What happens to names you’re not sure about?
They’re held for your review instead of changed. A name we can’t fix with confidence is flagged, and a blank we can’t fill honestly stays blank and flagged. We never write a guess to your list.
Can you fill in missing first names?
Yes, with Name Enricher, included in Pro and up. When the email address clearly contains a name (jane.doe123@gmail.com → Jane), it adds it. When it doesn’t (info@acme.com), the contact is flagged for your review.
Compared with the tools you already have
Why not just use =PROPER() in Excel or Google Sheets?
PROPER capitalizes the first letter of every word, and that’s all. “mckay” becomes “Mckay”, “SARAH JOHNSON” becomes “Sarah Johnson” and is still a full name in a first-name field, “test” becomes “Test”, an email address becomes “Jane.Doe123@Gmail.Com”, and a blank stays blank. It also means exporting your list, cleaning a copy, and re-importing it, and the list is messy again as soon as new contacts arrive. We fix the names in the list itself.
How do I fix first names in Klaviyo without exporting a CSV?
Connect Klaviyo with an API key. First Name Cleaner scans the list or segment you choose, shows you every change, and writes the ones you approve straight back to the profiles. No export, no spreadsheet, no re-import.
Doesn’t Klaviyo fix capitalization already?
Klaviyo’s personalization tag can display a name in title case (Klaviyo help), and its data-transformation add-on, part of Advanced KDP, can write a capitalized copy to a new property while leaving the original unchanged (Klaviyo help). Neither fixes a full name in the first-name field, a title, or an email address sitting where a name should be, and neither holds the uncertain ones for review. We fix the first-name field itself.
Can’t HubSpot do this?
HubSpot can fix capitalization formatting automatically on Data Hub Professional or Enterprise (HubSpot knowledge base). First Name Cleaner works on any HubSpot plan, and it handles more than capitalization: full names in the first-name field, titles, junk values, and the uncertain cases held for your review.
What about Mailchimp’s TITLE merge tag?
Mailchimp’s *|TITLE:FNAME|* changes how the name is displayed in that one email (Mailchimp merge tag cheat sheet). The stored name stays broken everywhere else it’s used. We fix the record itself.
Why not just do this in ChatGPT?
You can, for a few hundred names. But it means pasting your customers’ names into an AI tool and copying the results back by hand, one batch at a time. First Name Cleaner never sends your contacts to an AI model, and it writes the clean names back to your list for you.
Why not use Insycle or a full CRM data tool?
Insycle is built for data teams standardizing every field across systems. If that’s you, great. If you’re a marketer who just wants the first name to be right, that’s us. Insycle starts at $100 a month, billed annually, and has no Klaviyo connector.
Safety and privacy
Will this mess up my existing data?
No. Before we write anything back, we show you a full preview of every change. Your original values are saved before anything changes. You approve in bulk or record by record. We don’t delete anything. On paid plans, restore any change in one click from your Klaviyo account.
Can I undo a change?
Yes. Every original value is backed up before anything changes. On paid plans, restore any change in one click from your Klaviyo account.
Do you use AI?
No. Your contacts are never sent to OpenAI, Anthropic, or any other AI provider, and never used to train a model.
How do you connect to my CRM, and is it secure?
You connect Klaviyo with an API key, or link your HubSpot or Mailchimp account, or upload a CSV. Your list stays yours, and every original value is saved before anything changes. See our privacy policy for exactly how your data is handled.
What if my list has names in other languages?
We handle Latin-script names across major languages, including hyphenated names, apostrophes, and accents. Names in non-Latin scripts (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic) we leave exactly as we found them rather than guess.
